8 Ways to Choose Your New Boss
8 Ways to Choose Your New Boss Going for a job interview is as much about you being interviewed as you interviewing the interviewer. Remember that the reason you are in an interview is that the employer has a need that you can hopefully be the solution to. Before you agree to join a company, you want to be sure that the people you will be working with will be helping you out, transferring knowledge and making sure you progress in your role. The most important person will obviously be your new manager. Picking your new boss is similar to choosing long term friends or even your partner â" the difference being that you are likely to spend more waking time with your new boss. Make sure you get the selection right by going through this checklist before you decide if your potential new boss is right for you: 1. Chemistry You will know straight away if you have the right chemistry with your manager-to-be. Sense of humor, body language, common interest and rapport in general will determine how you get along. Once you have left the interview, youâll have that gut feeling. Be honest with yourself; can you see yourself working with this person for the next three to five years? If the answer is no, run to the hills. 2. Background Make sure you ask your future manager how they ended up in their role. Was it by choice or necessity? How long have they been with the company? Has it turned out the way they expected? What would they change if they could? This will help you draw up a picture of what things will be like for you. 3. Style of management Is your potential new boss a sugar coater or more of a boot camp drill instructor? Ask them to describe themselves as a manger and what their priorities are. Watch out for David Brent style corporate buzzwords and clichés. Another vital clue is how much they like to get involved in their subordinatesâ day to day work. Some people hate being micro managed, others thrive on it. Whatever you prefer, itâs important you are both on the same wavelength. 4. Can you learn from them Just like they say you should work to learn, your boss should be your teacher. If you can see yourself learning from this person right now and for the next years, you are probably on to a winner. The question to ask yourself here is whether they possess skills that you want to acquire and do they seem happy to share these with you? 5. Whom do they report to Insist on meeting the boss of the boss. You need to understand what type of manager they report to as this will trickle down to your situation as well. If possible, ask to see the top dog separately so that you can ask a few probing questions around your potential new manager. 6. Problem handling There is nothing better than a bit of pressure to see someoneâs real character come out. Whether itâs a conflict in their team or an IT crash, how did they handle it? Ask for a specific example. This will give you an idea of how they would deal with you in case you lock horns in the future. They say a clever employee knows how to manage their manager, and the only way to do this is knowing how they are likely to react in a particular situation. 7. Company outlook Ask the manager what major obstacles they foresee for the company, what their plan is to overcome these. This will show you how clued up they are on matters outside their department and what preparations they have in store. 8. Where are they heading Try to understand what the goals are for the boss. Is he or she going places or staying put for the foreseeable future? You need to know this as you might want to move up the ladder one day. The flipside would be that you could end up being managed by a complete stranger overnight. Decision time Your ability to get along well with your future manager will mean everything to your job satisfaction and career progression. After you have interviewed your potential future boss, take your time to digest the information. Always go with what your instinct tells you about the person. Never chase only money or glory as it will come back and bit you where it hurts. Did you pick the right boss last time around? What will you do different next time you change jobs? Share your experiences in the the comments below.

Make the Most of Your Raise
Make the Most of Your Raise (This is a guest post by our friends at credit.com) You may want to avoid the nerve-wracking experience of asking for a raise, but according to a survey by Jobvite, 84% of workers who ask for a raise get one! That percentage alone should be enough to get you over the hurdle and into your managers office. Be sure to have the proof to back it up though. Here are some signs it might be time to ask for a raise: Youâre solving more complex problems and making a bigger impact on the companyâs bottom line. Youâve taken on more responsibility. You predict problems and proactively solve them without being told. You can brainstorm and communicate ideas for positive change. If youâre anything like the rest of Americans, once you get that raise, you may be tempted to upgrade your life or take a long-overdue vacation. However, the best thing you can do is save more and/or pay off debt. For more tips about what to do after you get a raise, check out the infographic below. It includes 7 things you should do to make the most of your raise (after a reasonable celebration of course). Please include attribution to Credit.com with this graphic.

This is Not How Its Done
This is Not How Itâs Done Be nice to people on your way up because youll meet them on your way down. (Wilson Mizner) I was shocked to read about the emails sent by a woman who includes in her email signature â2013 International Association of Business Communicators communicator of the year.â Her name is Kelly Blazek, and she runs a 7,300-subscriber JobBank newsletter based in Cleveland, Ohio. Sheâs supposed to be helpful (and a great communicator) but after her condescending and downright nasty emails to young careerists became public, sheâs doing a lot of damage control. What was she thinking? Especially in the age of Twitter, where her mean-spirited email was posted and drew hundreds of comments. Her response to a 26-year old who had the audacity to try to join her email group and followed up with a LinkedIn request to connect, was titled, âYou Humility Lesson for the Year from a âProfessional.ââ âWe have never met. We have never worked together. Apparently, you heard I produce a Job Bank, and decided it would be stunningly helpful for your career prospects if I shared my 960+ LinkedIn connections with you â" a total stranger who has nothing to offer me.â She closes with this charming shot: âYouâre welcome for your humility lesson for the year. Donât ever reach out to a senior practitioner again and assume that their carefully curated list of connections is available to you just because you want to build your network.â This from someone whose Yahoo List site bills her as âa senior communications executive who just enjoys helping others in her profession.â In a response to another young job seeker who asked why he was no longer receiving her emails (and who had posted his feelings on Twitter) she replied (her grammatical errors make this even more cringe-worthy): Youre super-brilliant Twitter stunt sealed your fate. And does that work well when you interview for a job and dont get hired? I suggest you sign up for the other Job Bank in town. Oh, guess what there isnt one⦠Done with this conversation, and you. Although Blazek has issued private and public apologies, itâs much too little, too late; character is defined by what you do when you think no one is watching. The PR backlash is scathing, and rightfully so. Blazek has probably ruined her reputation forever, and itâs hard to feel sorry for someone who shows such contempt for people who are only asking for what she purports to offer. I, too, could be classified as a âsenior practitionerâ who offers to help people connect with meaningful employment. I sometimes get requests from people I donât know and who donât understand the rules of good networking. And sometimes, I have bad days. But I would never respond as she did to someone who reached out. Itâs unconscionable. Great communicators lead by example. My cardinal rule of networking is that you give whenever you can to create good career karma. I canât possibly know in advance whether someone âhas nothing to offer me.â If thatâs the basis for the way Blazek conducts her professional and personal life, she will have a very rocky road ahead. I hope that this media firestorm has been her âHumility Lesson for the Year.â P.S.: If sheâs truly a communications professional, she has seriously underestimated the power of Twitter. Her Titter page has been taken down, but a couple of parody sites have cropped up in its place. One is @KrabbyBlazek, and the tag line reads: Join the Other Job Bank in town. Oh wait, there isnt one. The other is my favorite: @OtherNEOJobBank, with the bio: Oh wait, there is one. And its run by a couple of millennials.

The Freaks Shall Inherit The Earth Entrepreneurship For Weirdos, Misfits, And World Dominators - (Book Review)
The Freaks Shall Inherit The Earth Entrepreneurship For Weirdos, Misfits, And World Dominators - (Book Review) Chris Broganprovides strategy and skills for the modern business. He is CEO of Owner Media Group, a sought after public speaker, and theNew York Times bestselling authorof nine books and working on his tenth. Ask him about it! Learn more about him atchrisbrogan.com.His book,The Freaks Shall Inherit The Earth, was an easy read and put a lot of spotlighton the ways in which people can create abusiness out of their own weirdness. I loved it.Also Check out the interview I did withChris Broganat the bottom of the page when youâre done with the review!Youâre A Freak Ifâ¦evalevalIn the very first pages of the book, Brogan lets us knowhisdefinition of the word freak, and I donât disagree with him at all. If any of the following pertain to you, youâre a freak. You donât fit in without some serious effort. You are not a big fan of settling or compromising.Youâre looking for a way to allow your weirdness to be an asset, and not as the deficit that people have tried to convince you it is.Now, withweirdnessbeing loosely defined, I would use that last bullet point to define myself as a freak. I started a blog, thatâs weird. I read an average of one book a week, thatâs weird.Quit ItBrogan lists some things thatmustbe discontinued in your life if you want to turn that freakiness into a business, no matter how much of a freak you are.Watching TV. Granted, I am somewhat a Netflix junkie, I donât just randomly spend hours on end watching it if I have other important things that need to be done. I have a to-do list for every day and once that list is finished, then I am free to get on with my shows.âKeeping Up.â Pay attention only to what and who is important to you. I doubt that includes the Kardashians.Following everyone who follows you on social media.More or less goes hand in hand with the previous.Living up to othersâ expectations. This may be my favorite from the âquit list.â Donât worry what other people think about you or your weirdness and don ât bother trying to fit into the box they put you in.Meetings. Probably the most useful nugget I picked up from this book is to keep meetings at 20 minutes or less unless you are getting paid. I actually try my best to plan my entire daily to-do list in 20-minute increments.Bragging.Gossip. I canâtstandit. Well before reading this book I have been an advocate of not talking about other people when they arenât around. It doesnât make you look better than them. Itâs really just another form of bullying if you ask me. Talk about important stuff.Hoping the world will like you. Who cares?Doing stuff out of a sense of obligation. This one was a little confusing. I had to read it a few times to understand. Basically, donât do things because youfeellike you have to. Figure out if you have to or not and then act accordingly.Buying dumb things. Iâm still working on this.Final ThoughtsMan, there is still so much to this book that I havenât covered. Brogan goes over different bu siness models you can use, planning for your future, different skills you need to acquire, etc. I learned a lot more than I expected to from this one. Iâd have to say my favorite section of the book is where Brogan goes over sketching a business model.Youâll have to read the book yourself to catch that part, though. If youâre a freak and you want to build a business,Chris Broganhas the blueprint. You can see the interview I did with Chrishere.

Boasting Is Not Part of Your Career
Boasting Is Not Part of Your Career Boasting Is Not Part of Your Career Boasting âainâtâ where itâs at. Never has. Never will. Look how far boasting got this guy: (watch this video) He thought he had done a great job and was celebrating himself in the end zone, except he neglected to see a very large mistake he made on the way there. Ouch. The very best football players, or for that matter, any worker, should never be boasting. You should always approach things with a sense of being grounded. Thereâs nothing wrong with being excited when everyone has a big win⦠but the key is to remember that no one person is responsible for the team or companyâs success. It takes a team, and if you take credit and boast, it only serves to isolate you. And when you boast about something either you messed up or took credit for something someone else did, you look like the foolish idiot like the football player above. When it comes to our careers, it is important to own our successes, but instead of saying, âI did this!â while thumping oneâs chest, itâs much better to say, âHereâs how I helped.â While most boasting mistakes donât play out live on national television, they can come back to haunt you. So remember to quietly celebrate your wins, but itâs only when you focus on being the helper to achieving that win rather than owning it outright, youâll have better career karma.

Tough (Question) Tuesday What do you deserve
Tough (Question) Tuesday What do you deserve you deserve to have your dreams come true by Valentina A couple of weeks ago, I was talking with one of my Operations! groups about our Vampire voices yknow, the voices we all have in our heads that suck the good stuff outta us when I noticed a theme: I deserve. a break, a snack, a meal, a trashy TV show, to lie on the couch, to take it easy tonight Isnt it funny/infuriating when our Vampire voices tell us we deserve to not work on our creative projects, our passionate careers, our side hustles? That, essentially, we dont deserve to make a full-time living doing what we love, to spend our time on what makes us happy, to pick up our guitar or our pens or our paints and play? Please help me turn this injustice on its head and answer in the comments: What do you deserve? -
